Richard Bitterman

Richard Bitterman trained as a mechanical engineer and a product designer at Chicago's Institute of Design. In 1969, he began to experiment with metalsmithing techniques: the result was an unorthodox jewelry and sculpture that united non-precious metals in a way not seen before.

Surprising even him, within a year, creating art had become his full time occupation. Some time later, he made his first mezuzah case and by 1982 Bitterman Jewish ceremonial objects were well known in the United States.

His insistence on fabricating his pieces individually assures that no two are exactly alike. His ability to invest traditional feeling into contemporary materials makes him unique as an American Jewish metalsmith.

He still does his work by himself in a large house in Chicago and has a showroom there as well. You will also see Bitterman's jewel-like Judaica in private collections and in synagogues throughout the United States, Europe and the Americas.
